Everything You Were
You used to be a butterfly
I can tell
In the way you leaped
From rock to rock
Along the beach
You used to be a bird
I can tell
In the way you sang
Under the stars
Stretched out in the grassy field
You used to be a maple seed
I can tell in the way you twirled and spun
Across the sand
In the blue skirt that fluttered with you
You used to be a cheetah
I can tell
In the way you raced
Through the forest
And always won
You used to be a house cat
I can tell
In the way you sat and stared
At nothing and everything
For hours and hours
You used to be a tree
I can tell
In the way you stood still
Let you hair whip around
And the breeze caress your face
You used to be a hornet
I can tell
In the way you pinched
When someone bothered you
And you had better things to do
You used to be lightning
I can tell
In the way you flashed and brightened
When you were happy
And your eyes lit up
You used to be a snake
I can tell
In the way you snuck and hypnotized
When there was something you wanted
And someone in your way
You used to be a flower
I can tell
In the way your light skin, dark hair
Twinkled with blue eyes
When the light shined just so
You used to be the wind
I can tell
In the way you danced
From insane to reality
And slept for three days
You used to be an ant
I can tell
In the way you shrunk
As time passed
And people changed
You used to be a mouse
I can tell
In the way you hid
Until the moment when no one looked
That never happened
You used to be a dandelion
I can tell
In the way you changed over night
And left suddenly with summer
Leaving but roots of memory
You used to be a human
I can tell
In the memories that remain
And the sparkling eyes of a girl
I knew and maybe loved
You’re happy for now
I can tell
In the satisfied look on your face
That stirs the regret in my heart
And the dragonfly that darts between the headstones
