“maybe I can help”

“Ah, yes, you want to be a writer don’t you?”

“You say that as if it’s a bad thing”

“No, no. just a lonely thing. Sometimes the world you create on the page seems more friendly than the lives in the world you actually live in.

There it is, just a stocking, dripping with damn holiday cheer.
Portrait above it on the mantel
Look we’re all smiling so nice.
All so nice with the browned tree in the corner,
Waiting to burst into flames.
Burst into flames!
Most of the ornaments have fallen,
Sparkling glass littering the floor
Like the flour from cookie-baking rotting down the corridor.
Been a year, now it’s Christmas Eve again
And I’m a skeleton,
I’m watching the ants clean up what I can’t.
Last one in my family to die
We’re all skeletons
Guess they saved the youngest to watch and cringe and dread.
So there’s the stocking, dripping with damn holiday cheer.
Still haven’t opened the presents
They’ll just taunt me from in there.
