For Melissa
If I close my eyes,
I can still see her.
Her golden and curly locks,
that tiny sparkle in her bright blue eyes,
the ragged sneakers that pounded the pavement
as we ran home from school
in the pouring rain.
If I close my eyes,
I can still hear her.
Her singing in the coffee shop
that warm winter night,
her heartbeat as she cried into my shoulder
as the sky turned purple over the lake.
If I close my eyes,
I can still feel her,
smell her hair,
hug her tightly,
read he thoughts.
If I close my eyes,
I still know her.
But when I open them
she’s gone.
