(Did You Know?) Love Once Brought You Happiness
Did you know that love once brought you happiness?
No, says the boy, to the raisin-woman, rocking in the chair
Gazes out the window, with a gleam, dimmed by the rain
lurking underneath his soft fresh eyes.
More days and months go slinking by
Still no sign of Her.
No, I did not know that,
And their bodies freeze forever
looking out the window, sitting in the chair
Did you know, my trusting daughter, that love once brought you happiness?
No, says the girl, softly with conviction
as she reaches for the pile of crinked up, folded letters
that he’d be there for her forever
A single tear stains a page, as they are ripped in two
And her hands freeze there forever
shredding promises not made
Did you know, angel child, that love once brought you happiness?
No, says the child, too young to know
the wonderful life, the love-then-joy
before His Hand
swooped in and snatched
one of His away
and the corpse freeze there forever
in the box of love laid deep
in the ground
So to stay.
