Forbidden
They were forbidden words for me,
Stuck inside my mouth and left to tumble around my roaming mind, never allowed to be muttered or uttered unless at dinner parties when the adults were drunk off of wine and sick to their stomachs with potatoes and chocolate.
And as my tongue clenched onto the letters that I desired to say,
My fingers purple with force and my face red with strangulation,
I finally opened my lips and let free the letters my voice had trouble repeating and my heart had trouble beating—
“I love you.”
