Powdered Sugar Stars
Tiny, white paint splatters
on an endless blue canvas
Millions of powdered-sugar stars
sprinkled across the night sky
That’s what I see when I look up
So many twinkling, sparkling fairy lights
enough for every person on this earth
to make their very own wish
But you tell me
there are no stars in the city?
Just an eery orange glow, a never setting sun
fueled by neon signs, streetlights, bedside lamps
Is that all you see?
A melting pot of other’s brightness
littering your heavens
as trash litters your streets
So now
when I wish upon a star
letting my thoughts float up, up, up
like wayward balloons
I ask that
someday
you can,
too.
