Favorite Quote:
"I really found the simple things live closest to your heart, I'm not alone because I live inside a world that is my own"

I drowned with the skills only a swimmer has

Sinking deeper and deeper

Into what I know have come to know as

The desire to fit in

An all consuming current

A riptide that pulls me under

Leaves me gasping for air

Suffocates me with the ways of others

I thought I’d been swept out to far

But I could never lose myself completely

To the powerful, persuasive sea of people

I might swim with the current

But I dare to go horizontal

Leaving swimming deeper for those who are long gone

Eventually the pull lessened

My breath came back, as did I, for

I have saved myself with the skills only a swimmer has

I am in high school and have really been feeling a lot of pressure as do many of the other kids in my school, to drink. I am on the swim team both in high school and outside. I was inspired one day while at practice, just thinking about the alcohol being a sea filled with all the people who have caved. I really hope that this poem can reach out to people who are feeling the same pressures in high school and realize that they are not alone, I am feeling it too.
