Unmasked
He wears a mask,
Hides his face,
So the world can’t know
Exactly his place.
They all say
That he’s a nice guy,
Yet they don’t see
Behind the lie.
It’s the face behind the face
Where the secrets I find
Begin to take shape
Deep within his mind.
Some small, simple words
With meaning larger than life
In a complex exchange,
In which secrets were rife,
And I saw his mask
Fall slowly to the floor,
And the face then exposed
Intrigued me even more.
So captivated, entranced,
I lowered my own.
Somehow it was understood:
We were not alone.
So ended the masquerade,
If only for then,
And we didn’t have to hide
Like time and time again.
He saw me for once:
No ordinary girl—
That we’re in the same boat:
Two souls hidden from the world.
