Run away,
through cold and gloomy shadows of night
leave behind dying leaves and decaying trees
and the emptiness you are too weak to fight

Run away
past black reflections on an autumn lake
inexorably shifting, shimmering, and twisting
into resurging images of your relentless ache

Run away
In midnight strides you are defined
Not by your twilight memories and daybreak worries
Leave your past and future behind

Run away
let fear and sweat be your guide
let the pounding pain in your legs be your world
lest your mind unleash the agony inside

Have you ever had a feeling too powerful to handle? I wrote this poem to reflect on my method of escape, a method I'm sure I share with many runners out there.
