"The question isn't "what are we going to do," the question is "what aren't we going to do?""-Ferris Bueller

I remember how we started out as friends.
We used to splash through the waves,
And roam the docks
Until the last glisten of sun
Disappeared beyond the horizon.
*
*
*
*
I remember how we used to get up at the crack of dawn,
And grab our nets
To go on the search
For the perfect crabbing spot,
Not caring if we were miles from home.
*
*
*
*
I remember how we could run wild
Through the beach,
With not a care in the world.
And we would nag on our sisters
Just for the fun of it.

I remember the year everything changed.
We started that summer as always.
Splashing through the waves,
Crabbing in the best spots,
Running wild along the coast.

I remember how you took me to a place
I had never been to before.
You held my hand, and called me pretty.
You brought me to the land known as
Romance.

*
I remember hiding away in the closet,
Hoping to not get caught
By your parents or mine.
Just so we could be held
In each other's arms.
*
*
*
*
I remember when I left.
We knew we would see each other
In a matter of two short weeks.
My heart couldn’t wait for those days to be over
So we could be together again.

I remember when we met again.
Things were different.
And it was because of her. My friend.
You saw her and forgot about me.
Like I was never the girl you kissed.
*
*
*
*
I remember that you broke
My heart that summer.
I cried and cried until
My eyes wept no more,
For you, my love.
*
*
*
*
I remember how I would sit
At home thinking about why
You had to do this to me, your friend.
I trusted you, I gave you everything
And you took advantage of me.
*
*
*
*
Then I realized
That I deserved better than you.
I was stronger than you thought.
So this is for you my first love.
Good-bye for the final time.
