"Some day the war will end, but oh, I knew,”
that it would last this long.
I spend my nights,
Praying,
Hoping,
That someday he will return.
But no,
He won’t, will he?
Doubt swarms my mind.
“Oh mother, mother, where is happiness?”
I know it isn’t in war!
I shouldn’t have let him go,
My love being too strong.
Never let him go,
Why’d I let him go?

Inspired by the poem,
“The Sonnet-Ballad”
By Gwendolyn Brooks

The author's comments:
This was an inspired poem by one of my favorite poets, Gwendolyn Brooks. In English class we culled two lines from a poem and wrote our own, and that's what I did here. The lines in my poem that have "quotations" around them, are the borrowed lines.
