I Do Not Sleep
I do not sleep.
It’s not as if I don’t want to sleep.
I just can’t. My mind doesn’t like to rest.
I know it’s healthy,
Or good for your body,
And reduces stress and blahblahblah.
But I cannot sleep.
From what I’ve heard, sleep is an enjoyable experience.
My dad used to say life was that terrible thing between sleep.
He always found that funny,
And would throw back his head and laugh his hearty laugh.
Mom would roll her eyes and ask him if he wanted some more cream in his coffee.
It was then that I decided when I got married.
Scratch that, if I got married.
I would give my husband a hot cup of coffee every morning.
Even holidays.
Just like my mom did.
This theory always sounded great in my mind.
But one day I told my mom of my fragile idea.
She looked at me with her emerald green eyes and gentle smile
She ran her fingers through my hair
She said:
“That’s sweet that you want to make it a tradition.
For all the future women in this family.
But, sweetie,
You have to consider,
really think about this,
the possibility,
What if he doesn’t like coffee?”
I do not sleep.
