I greet the lovely night hours in a state of gratitude,
Relieved that I have not yet fallen into that state of which they call REM sleep,
A state which prohibits me from distracting my mind and instead takes over,
Controlling my thoughts which I no longer can sense,
I used to think I hated night because there was no hiding place,
I now see that it is just the opposite,
The dark and the blankets provide the safest resting place I have ever known,
Leaving me with only myself to face,
Leaving me scared of what my wild imagination might weave into my mind,
I now see the reason for this undiagnosed case of insomnia,
I fear that I might not like what I see once the dark greets my lids,
Releasing me into an unknown state of puffy dreams,
So from this point forward I reach out a hand to befriend my dreams,
I ask kindly for them not to become nightmarish,
I rest my head on a soft pillow and breathe in and out the safe air,
The night sounds whisper that there is nothing to fear,
I learn to trust myself again as I beckon for the sweetest dreams to come beneath my lids.
