If I Could Be Anything Other Than Me
If I could be anything other than me I would be the breeze
I’d see all but not be seen if I were the breeze
If I could be anything other than me I would be the trees
I’d know all that lives and had lived while never having to speak
If I could be anything other than me I’d be dirt
I would have felt the feet slaves trying to be free, I’d feel the thud of soldiers killed in wars, I would hear the vows of couples becoming one, and I’d see children born then watch them grow
If I could be anything other than me I’d rather stay as me
Why dirt, breeze, or trees be when you could live, speak and eat
Why be stuck in one place for life when you could move around and see what you please Why be imaginary, and ignored when you could be seen and heard
Why be a tree if you can’t cry?
Why be the breeze if you can’t love?
Why be dirt if you can’t fight?
If I could be anything other than me I think I’d stay as me and cry when hurt and love someone and fight for rights of all mankind
What would you be if you could be anything other than you?
