Afraid to write
To let the pen's black blood pour--
And clot
In the face of my want
Of mind and of age

Afraid to taint
A page that had potential that
I lack--
To form some lines of genius
An Emily Dickinson twist

Afraid of the shame
The stinging probing
Of revisiting my poor verses
After gaining--after trudging--
Through more years and more pages

Afraid to pretend
That I know this blank territory
Well enough to guide my pen
Through its neatly lined streets

Yet afraid to wait
Afraid to be afraid
Lest the blank, accusing page
Outlives my timid pen.

Yes--and then I guess it's contradictory (ironic, I prefer) that I'm writing about being unable to write.
