If Only
It’s the way you look up at the stars,
wishing that if only you could stitch them up
and have them as a blanket around your arms,
their warmth would protect you from anything.
If only you could take the world off your shoulders,
and live like your last song is about to be sung.
If only the grass would be greener, and the ceilings
would fall. There would be no limits.
It’s the way you say “I love you,”
if only it were a permanent marker on the heart.
Sometimes you hope that it's not a battlefield,
but if only, if only you had your weapons
and shields, it would be okay.
If only you could see the light at the end of the tunnel. If only you were the last and only
thought on someone’s mind.
If only you knew that the end
is where you begin.
