My Life

March 16, 2010
By Anonymous

My life
flows smooth like
the Yukon River.
The only time it
gets rough
is when a storm comes.

Wind blowing,
waves splashing,
currents pushing me back,
far, far away from
my dream
to get to the top.

But that doesn't
stop me.
Like a king salmon,
I fight back upstream.
Current weakening,
setting me free.
Then I set sail,
overcoming the rough
waves of the storm in
my life.

THis is a very deep and thougtful poem. The author  has expressed her thoughts and feelings in  a delightful link to her culture and life on the Yukon. Not many young people can do this.

It is so nice to find a poem written by someone close to home, I was very interested in writing poems when I was young.  This poem gives me the feeling and a clear picture that I am familiar with, Yukon River, King salmon, & storms.  I could see this writer going through the storm, but she is strong and ready to conquer whatever comes her way.  This poem is powerful, it took me to a situation of a young person struggling and ready to overcome anything.

I really like the salmon simile, but I want to know more about the author's dream and getting to the top.

Where and what is the top? I want more description.

Good work, though.
