I Pledge Allegiance

I look to my left,
See my best friend.
Fallen and gone,
He has come to his end.

I look to the sky,
Recite a quick prayer.
Pick up my gun.
Say, “this isn’t fair”.

He was still a boy,
Barely eighteen years old.
Fighting for his country,
In a world so cold.

Bombs fly overhead
As my brothers die.
One by one,
I say good-bye.

Americans protest
Saying, “no more war”.
Do they think I want this?
Who am I fighting for?

Through rain, sleet, and snow,
I’ll stand here with my gun.
And when I return,
My job will be done.

man... i read this and my mind goees to all the family i have fighting over seas... thank you so much for writing about the soldiers struggle. this is a great poem. the imagery puts me right in the battle field and makes me think the warriors thoughts. well done.

no, I never had anyone die in the navy or army or wars or anything.  Both my grandpas were in the war, one was a pilot and one was a medic, but neither died.  I just wrote this one day.  I believe I was listening to Have you Forgotten by Darrel Worley.
