Porcelain Smile
I was once the much loved doll of a child,
So sweetly did she smile and so kind were her hands,
Which caressed my hair and straightened my clothes,
Which held me tight when she slept,
I remember the first time I saw her cry,
She’d fallen and bashed her knee,
How I would have willingly given up,
Every single one of my bright red curls,
If only it would stop her pain,
And her first day of school,
I know that kids can be cruel,
She came home in tears,
How I would have willingly given up,
My pretty pale blue dress,
If only it would stop her pain,
And the first time she had a car wreck,
I remember she was so upset,
How I would have willingly given up,
My gorgeous green glass eyes,
If only it would stop her pain,
And the first time her heart was broken,
Her boyfriend had been unfaithful,
How I would willingly have given up,
My lacey little umbrella,
If only it would stop her pain,
And now that she’s old,
And the machine beeps a rhythm,
Then stops,
And does not start again,
I would give up all that I am,
If only pain,
Was all there was to worry her,
But there’s nothing left of me,
Nothing,
But my Pathetic Porcelain Smile.
