"A Most Ridiculous Obsession"
It was a late Friday night
That he saw her for the first time.
The rest of the world disappeared,
And for once everything felt right.
She danced, she flew, across the floor,
And she moved like a panther.
She was wind through listening trees
And in rapture, he waited for more.
Around her neck, she wore a gold chain.
Laced on it, a lock with no key
He believed he could love her forever
And protect her from any pain.
Up in the sky, the stars shone so bright
And winked down at the two on Earth
Two people who had found one another
Could someone’s heart truly feel this light?
Yet their love was a forbidden dream,
Like Shakespeare’s star crossed lovers.
She loved him, but could never be his
For another claimed her, ruling supreme.
A glance, a word, a broken heart, a tear
A glass figure of happiness crushed.
The harsh touch of reality snapped him back
And he prepared to disappear.
The rain from above was like a mourner,
Making his walk home like a death march.
And as the howling wind struck a forlorn note,
He ground his heel into the rose on the corner.
Hope, Heaven, happiness, he was lost of,
And with one last mournful glance back, he said,
“Thank you for curing me of my
Ridiculous obsession with love.”
