Ode to a Mountain
Created from under;
A remnant of fiery arguments,
plates battling deep in the earth
You rise in a surge of heat,
suddenly piercing placid clouds
floating like wisps in the sky
Air brushes against your crevices
like a soft blanket
The vibrant red of a morning sun
seeps behind your towering peak,
flooding you in a dazzling embrace
Yellow, periwinkle, and rosy speckles
Bloom all around your regal body,
A necklace of wind-wavering flowers
The moss grows lush and green
Creatures dance across you with lithe feet
Powdery, snowy flakes cascade gently down;
They envelope you in calm, peaceful white
Pristine droplets trickle down your back
At the urging of sunbeams
Birds fill the skies with a sweet cacophony
that echoes around you
Your shadow is cast for miles and miles,
Sheltering a small, resplendent universe
You have seen its beginning
You will see it end.

One of my most vivid memories is of hiking with my mother in Oregon many years ago. After trekking uphill for what felt like two hours (but probably wasn't) we rounded a bend and encountered a majestic mountain view. It was then that I understood my mother's love for nature. Nature is the only kind of beauty that is everlasting, and I wanted to capture this in my poem.
