For My Death Day
One day this dismal heart shall no more beat,
The weary soul to sky serene retreat.
Fulsome cares this mind shall no longer keep,
But ever rest content in its soft sleep.
Dust shall I return e'en 'fore I wot,
But when shall Fate arrive and cut my life's knot?
Then shall I be clad in a suit sublime,
Oblivious to loud cries and mourning rhyme.
My flesh be melting in the raging fire,
The proud flames dancing to the warbling lyre.
Thus am I dissolv'd into the thin air,
A life lived and lost, a life vainly fair.
Yet I hope fondly for the Platonic year,
When all are restor'd, and I still be here.
