and a year ago,

I was in love with you

a year ago,

you loved me too

well actually, you were obsessed

with me and I was intoxicated by the attention

but the poem is better if we were in love

It is June 28th,

something monumental is happening

you will be the first person to

say "I love you" with no

strings attached

well, many strings,

but the poem is better if there were no strings

It's 11:11

I wish we could have loved without so many lies

It's 11:12

no I don't

It's 11:13

I wish we never met at all

I'm welcoming myself to July of another year

and it's the third year in a row you've wrecked me

Nothing has changed,

you're still out of my league

I'm still committed to someone else

So why am I still thinking of how your hand felt in

mine

Why am I still choking on the taste of orange soda

and the color red

III.

I'm choking on orange soda

and laughing so hard I have to pee

I'm tripping over baseballs and

the color red

How do you always manage to do this?

You gave me your flip flops

but not in time to keep

the blood from blistering

when I walked on the gravel

Remember that night you called 10 times

I had to cover up your lie

Because you thought you wouldn't say goodbye

It's not that I don't think you love me

I don't think you can save me

And your eyes are blue

blue like the color of the ocean on a postcard

someone sends you to tell you they love you

just not enough to stay

My hands can't write at the pace

that I think and so I will

always be a little in the past
