I remember that day

June 24th, 2022

The day our bodies were taken from us

By people who know nothing about them

By those who were obsessed with control

On that day, 

I thought of the women of the 1960s

Like Margaret Sanger and Mary Ware Dennett

Who fought life and limb for piece of mind

For the freedom of choice of our own bodies

For the right to contraceptives and sex education

I think of Norma McCorvey

Or better known as Jane Roe

A trailblazer for abortion rights

The mirrors of the past reflect today

Showing people still fighting

 For the very same rights

The icons of the past 

Worked so hard to have

For every victory

Came an equally crushing defeat

As more and more people began

Embracing our differences

The minority who opposed it

Grew louder

Until it felt like

Their voices were the only ones

Taking up space

So I beg of you

   Just like those of the past

Give us back our bodies

Give us the freedom

Of our own choice

Until you do 

No one will rest

We’ll scream as loud as we need to 

For our voices to be heard

Everyone has the right to their own bodies

No one take that away from us

Not even the Supreme Court
