"Sunflower Maze”

Fresh air shivered

through my veins

as i looked upon

lush green stems

dancing toward the unclouded sky.

i could smell the crisp morning air

iridescent leaves dangling off a husky stock

small and lean, dainty yellow petals

beneath them lay

miniature black seeds

huddled together in groups.

Standing tall and proud

in bunches lined up

stretching out in long rows

winding and tangling

trailing after one another

the sunflowers were surrounding us

with their tangled beauty.

My feet felt heavier

after each step

while i trailed

behind my family

the sunlight

on my back was causing

tiny drops of sweat to drip

down my neck.

But still i stretched

my neck longingly

toward the vibrant sky

hoping to catch another

glimpse of the top

of those majestic flowers

hoping to

quell the anxiety

from my soul.

i dragged my feet

as wind rustled

through my hair

as we walked past

a small wooden bench

i looked up to notice

the sky was cloudy

a little bit of rain

had begun to fall

on my head.

Even when those images

left my anxious mind

I felt hope

thinking of the sunflowers

so tall, so proud.

The author's comments:

This poem is about the calming beauty of sunflowers.  When I think of these sunflowers (tall and proud, blowing in the wind), my anxiety disappears and I see hope.
