a question without an answer

there’s loud thumping and laughter and doors opening and closing and suitcases thudding in the
hall outside
and at first i’m annoyed
but then i start to wonder who the people are
checking into this dump of a motel at eleven thirty at night
are they rich, poor,
happy, sad
about to get married, suffering a breakup
raising a healthy family
or struggling to raise a sick child?
i think and think
and fall asleep thinking
who are they?
