arms cramped and tense

my sweaty palms pressed up against

the black bones

known as

a steering wheel

christina’s chattering in my ear about sia

and i’m saying yeah, no, i guess

stressing about the drive and hugging every turn

and watching whether or not i’m drifting

to one side of the road or the other

while in the back of my mind

trying to decide if i’m a sia fan or not

and admitting to christina

ya, i like chandelier

but the meaning of the song really isn’t great

but now i’m distracted, and i’m stopping suddenly

because her fancy electric car is

hyper-sensitive

and it throws me off

and i’m jerking to a halt at a red stop sign

that i don’t see until i’m two feet away

and i’m still singing sia under my breath

deep down kinda wondering if christina will hear me or not

not that it really matters anyways

but my speed climbs and i’m going forty

in a twenty-five zone

dang, i gotta slow down, i’m thinking

but when i take my foot off the pedal

i slow down too fast

and the two books i’m borrowing from christina

slide to the back of the car

so she laughs and says it’s a mess back there anyways

and you don’t have to obey the speed limit

out here in the country

so i speed up again

and i start wondering if i’m half blind or something

cause i’m leaning waaaay forward but i really can’t read the next street sign

and christina is telling me the street is

norverd, or norham,

or something very similar to norway

but a little bit different

and she says turn there

so i do

and it isn’t much longer

before i’m pulling into my driveway and parking

and she tells me good job, i would say you

get an A

and i laugh, and say thanks

but she’s gotta be lying

Christina is a friend who took me out driving last night on some country roads. The experience was exhilarating but scary, which is the best!
