"Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of. The tree is the real thing." - Abraham Lincoln

I am sorry Mother.

I am sorry for slaughtering your offspring,

For ravaging your precious resources,

For poisoning your breath,

For dumping waste on your dying body,

For exploiting your care.

I am sorry Mother.

I am sorry for my ignorance,

For disregarding your health,

For scarring your beauty,

For abandoning you,

For giving up.

I am sorry Mother.

You raised me,

Nourished me,

Protected me.

Even though I caused you pain,

You still shielded me from cruelty.

I am sorry Mother.

But I have finally learned

Of the injustice,

Of the pain,

Of the torture I’ve caused.

And I promise a better future.

I am sorry Mother.

But the future is bright.

The poison will be cured,

The waste will be cleaned,

Your beauty will be restored,

And your resources will be protected.

I am sorry Mother.

But I am your devoted Child.

I promise,

With every step I take,

To preserve what is left

And put a smile on your face.
