Death

Is it a tragedy
(A wake up call?)
A blasphemous
Traitorous fall

Did the soldier's blood
That wet this land
Seep pointless, deep
Into the sand
Or did it fertilize
The grain of man

Are there silver linings
(Aside from those around
The corpse)
Or is there only pity
Among the hearts of all
Is there only a sob story
Left for us to hear
Around a fire
(Was our kindling born
From their bones?)
Or a song around a guitarist
(Was it carved from their
Corpse?)

Is there a silver lining
If you look beside the body
And find the ruins of a
Photo
Family portrait
(Once, they were happy

Now, they are dead)

Is your silver lining
A line of gold
Or copper oxidizing
In the sun
It may glint the same
(Hurt the same)
Lose the same
(Break the same)
But is it ever really certainly
Silver
Gold
Copper
Or is it simply metallic
(Like the blood beneath our
Feet)

Are we standing on corpses
Sad, in defeat
Or are we sanding with
Tragedy
Are we marching through
Their beat

Was their death
Meaningless
Or were the statues we built
On their bones
A necessary thing
Were their deaths meaningless
(Or did we give them meaning?)

Was death
Ever
A blessing
Or a curse
(Is death
The foundation
Of our universe)

Flowers grow from their skulls
(On their graves)
Are we traitorous
To think they should have stayed

Are your silver linings
Gold
Copper
Blood
Or are they simply hope

(That things have meaning)
