The Strong Songs of Strong Women Worn Weak
Women dance,
Their bodies painted not
With peach or apricot,
But with blueberry and plum.
Women eat,
Strawberry and cherry,
Red nectar of life dripping from their lips
Staining their teeth.
Women chatter,
They sing and scream their knowledge,
Of all life that they have borne,
And that which they have lived.
Women lie,
Deep beneath the dirt,
Their broken stones,
Like their broken bones,
Standing tall above them,
Like men,
Silencing their songs
From ever being heard.
This piece is about domestic abuse, something of which I am closely related.
