“Goodbye,” they say,

Already turning away.

The goodbyes of a friend

Are hard to speak,

But I know I will see them again.

Maybe tomorrow,

Maybe next week,

I will see them in the halls,

Or in class,

The hardest goodbyes

Are those you know

You’ll never speak again.

The goodbye to your dog,

Before she is put down.

The goodbye at a funeral,

To the family member you loved.

Those are the hardest to speak.

“Goodbye,” I call after them,

The peace that I will see them again

Washes over me.

The author's comments:

This piece is a piece I wrote using the prompt of taking something that someone said to me today or yesterday and using the line a few times. The line I used was "goodbye", just from a friend in the hallways of the school, but using that line, I wrote a poem that took the word goodbye deeper than just a friend saying goodbye.
