While police stand stiffly and justify the use of might
It’s ironic that people, fighting against police brutality
Are confronted by officials with a belligerent mentality.
 
The message of Black Lives Matter has charged people around it
To stand up for what is right and make changes to the counterfeit
“I can’t breathe:” the slogan for a movement that shook the nation
One man in his dying moments; the spark that lit the fire of racial inflammation.
 
Yet progress is being made one year later
From the murders of George Floyd and others
The first time an African-American won the Scripps spelling bee
And Kamala Harris in the nation’s second top spot, VP.
 
Declining acts of racism and prejudice on the streets
Signs of the changing times, discrimination, something to beat
The nation still has a long way to go,
But every step against hate, no matter how small, is a milestone.
 
We are all together, showing deepest support for all those out there
Members of the community, bound by a bond for the brothers and sisters who care
Racism, something that has to be shattered
Remember this: Black Lives Matter
