Lord of the Flies: A Tragedy Within
The sands shine slippery ocean
Outside wonders of an abandoned land
Sounds of life pierce and break-
A place of great silence
From planes crawl boys of diverse ages
Disheveled and half-to-death
Leaders are chosen and groups formed-
Trying to grasp the dangling roots of civilization
Foraging becomes normality
And pain soon subsides
Living with no care-
The island an oasis of effervescence
Minutes turn to hours and blend into days
Still living must go on
Glasses create fire-
Where possibilities of being rescued are ignited like flames
Fire can be uncontrollable however
And society can crumble to ash
Figures of a mysterious beast-
Only raise tensions between a once-solid pack
The differences are too much
Do we stay or go home?
United no more-
Torn apart to shreds
A once peaceful life
Now turns rogue
The boys once at peace-
Now have no mercy within themselves
The island once filled with sounds of happiness
Is imbued with the gruesome sounds of beating and death
What distinguishes these boys-
Between people and savages?
When help arrives after months of isolation
The boys are now men
Scarred for life-
By unspeakable views and actions
As the boys leave the island
This once peaceful island
All that remains-
Is society burning away

This poem was inspired by the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a stunning book filled with incredible imagery. The themes and morals of the novel are quite relevant to the present time.
