She glances at the mirror within the tranquil room
A girl stares back at her , with a skin of the shade coffee brown
A tear escapes her eye, a sign of despair and gloom
She makes an attempt to turn that frown upside down

Even though she has plastered a smile across her jaws
She piles up some powder on her face
But she can never escape her skin, which she believes is one of her flaws
But what can she do, after all she was born in that race
She’s not fair, it’s not fair.

She grabs her phone and puts on a filter on an app
This filter, like magical dust turns her from coffee brown to milky white
She is now ecstatic, for this filter covers her appearance, like how baldness is covered by a cap
But she puts down the phone in despair , realizing that people put this filter on to avoid looking like her , and she doesn’t feel like this is right
She’s not fair, it’s not fair

She puts on her large mask, not to escape the virus but to sheath her color from everyone
To sheath it from the bullies , who are all perfect with their originally milky white skin
These bullies who don’t go through struggles like her, but instead just have fun
But what did she do to to receive such a curse, after all she didn’t commit a sin
She’s not fair , it’s not fair

The author's comments:

This piece conveys the topic of racism in a very eloquent and empathetic manner. Written by a girl who went through this, it conveys her perspective and her point of view in the form of a short, sweet poem.
