Lines in the Sand
My hand is intertwined with yours
as we walk next to the deserted ocean.
The sun sets angrily, and we point and laugh.
I’m bundled in a sweater that’s far too big for my skinny frame
and jeans that are cuffed at my mid-calf,
and I don’t wear shoes.
We let the waves chill our ankles
and we walk just a little bit further,
just a little bit further,
just a little bit further.
I can trust you.
I know that.
But my stupid, stupid heart doesn’t.
I know you.
But you don’t know me.
So we’ll keep walking down this empty beach,
drawing lines in the sand.

This piece is about knowing you can trust someone, but just not letting yourself trust yourself enough to trust them, if that makes any sense ;).
