Icarus - The First
Icarus
They don’t tell your story right
They speak of wax wings and singed dreams
But they don’t speak of the love
That drove you to the sun
It takes a nation to love a god
But you gave it your all
Whispering worship against his skin
And drinking his empty promises like nectar
They don’t tell us
How you nipped at the sun’s skin
Thinking it tasted better
Than any holy ambrosia
They don’t speak about the days
You spent laboring for your lover
Waiting to feel his heat upon your skin
One last time
They forget
How you flew towards your love
And he rejected you for your mortality
And so you fell the way you do all things
Recklessly
Endlessly
Fully
Without second thoughts
And they don’t know
How Poseidon loved you
A bittersweet tragedy
So he welcomed you with open arms
And they were blind
To how the waves caressed the burns
And healed your scars
Salt water purifying you again, a second baptism
And when you opened your eyes
You were not greeted with the bright oblivion
Of a supernova
You locked eyes with the ocean abyss
And let salt water fill your lungs as you kissed him
You fell, you fell, you fell
You fell for the wrong god
And was caught
By the right power
Icarus
Do they know
Your story is made of mistakes
Built from love and heartbreak
