The Synagogue Lights
The synagogue lights were left on last night
We watch in our windows
As German soldiers march down our streets
Reassurance blossoms inside me
The Germans were good men!!
No synagogues; no valuables,
Yesterday our Rabbi was arrested in the street,
The lights in the Synagogue dim-
The race towards death begins.
The yellow star-
A sign of shame, a reminder of our conditions.
Moving to ghettos new families move in.
Anger, curiosity, hope,
The emotions collide in my brain.
The world becomes a cattle wagon,
And amidst the screeching of the wheels,
In the distance
The synagogue lights shut off.

This brief poem describes the periodical transport of German Jews to death. The poem is based on Eli Wiesel's Night. I used the symbol of the synagogue lights to represent the dying hope of the Jewish people as their hardships increase.
