Only You Can Save Yourself
Through everything you have done,
And who you have become,
You’ve made it to where you are now.
It’s dark out, there are no stars,
Only clouds.
It’s warm but not hot.
The floor creaks as you manage to sneak through the house,
And slip out of the window.
Into the woods you wander.
The trees surround you, tall, and filled with sharp pines.
Twigs snap, your shoes soak like a sponge.
But that doesn’t stop you, you want to go further.
Creatures of the night try to haunt you,
But you continue on.
You know what you must do.
No fear of getting lost,
But getting lost in your thoughts.
Not sure where you are headed,
You continue on.
You walk so long the path blisters your feet.
But that doesn’t lead you to your defeat.
Which path will you take?
The path of the dark and scary,
Or not even follow a path at all?
Voices whisper in your ear, suggesting you to follow their path.
But you are the one who ultimately decides which to follow.
You keep on going.
Still no fear of getting lost,
Your feet still hurt, but now you are lost.
The fear finally sinks in,
And you start to panic.
You wish that you could return home, But you have no clue where to start.
Your body gives in, the paths begin to vanish.
You fall down in the woods, and land with a “Bang”.
No chance of getting up.
But eventually you must.
Only you can save yourself.

Hello my Name is Tom, I wrote this piece in my Creative Writing Class at school. I was inspired to write this poem from "The Journey" by Mary Oliver.
