The sea it crashes, sprays, and spews,

The waves carry word of shocking news.

Swirling, whirling greens and blues,

Until the wind dies down.

Memories float onto the vacant shore,

A chewed-on pencil and an apple core.

Not a soul cared to love them before;

They’re now the talk of town.

A swelling cry of deep despair,

The once-calm sea is now where

A house once stood. The site is now bare

And a bright but brutal brown.

A quest was formed, a hero elected,

A fine young man all lads respected.

A map was drawn, colored, and corrected,

So he would know where to find safe ground.

They crossed their hearts, looked to the sky,

Said their prayers, bade him good-bye.

To succeed, they knew, he would have to try,

To calm the sea, or they’d drown.

A splendid sailor, they often said,

A heart of gold, but a heart of lead,

In an attempt to thwart the dangers ahead,

He received the blow without a sound.

For this piece I was inspired by the painting,
"The Great Wave off Kanagawa." I started writing, attempting to portray the image of the crashing waves, and the plot just came together.
