He acts just…..              like I did
He's going to get hurt just       like I did
But I can't save him
He has to learn

Just like I did

But at the end of the day
When it's all set and done
When he's hurt and needs me
When he can't sleep at night and feels all my pain
I'll be the shoulder to cry on...
Because as much as I know it hurts
He shouldn't have to get through it alone
Like I did...

In the poem “Like I Did” by Micah W, compassion and care for the guy that the narrator is expressing is shown through tone. W chooses to use tone because there are a lot of different feelings in caring for someone but wanting them to learn on their own. W wanted to show that without directly saying that. W tries to show all the things that go into showing tough love and wanting the best for someone while not wanting to baby them. First, she simply states “He acts” (1) with very little explanation as to how he acts. Then, she says “just like I did” (1) after a pause to add emphases to the fact that the narrator is looking back on the situation and knew the outcome which she states in the next line. W uses tone to show that the narrator feels every pain the male charter will eventually feel and wants to be there for him when he has to go through that pain.
