He sat next to me in science today
But only because the regular occupant was absent
And only because we had a substitute teacher
He was happy and cheerful
Although silent at times
But I was happy to have him by my side
I didn't feel so alone

I saw him at lunch
I was ecstatic to see him
I called his name
He stopped talking and joking with his friends
And responded to my call
The smile on his face disappeared the instant he saw me
Despair and sadness took its place
He became silent
It was unusual...
He normally called my name
He normally started talking with his friends again

I took my seat despairing
Could everything his friend told me be true?
Oh, how I wish it wasn't
Oh, how much easier my life would be if it wasn't
Must it be true?
His sad face continued to haunt me throughout lunch

What did his friend tell me?
His friend told me that the sad boy liked me
But that he was shy
He was too afraid to ask me to be his girlfriend...
But why did I tell his dear friend the one thing that could be the cause of his sadness?
I wasn't thinking, that's why...
