She was a sixteen year old beauty queen
With a heart full of gold and a shining smile
Full of curiosity and intelligence
She was an all-American girl

But it all went wrong one Friday night
It was late September, it was cold outside
She was riding her bike when she said to herself
I don’t look good, I look fat, I want to be thin

It was a promise in her head
A promise that would be kept
Until the day she died
She was an all-American girl

She would eat and cry and make herself puke
She would run and jump and refuse her food
She would live and laugh and love and pray
That someday, she would look okay

She was just ten pounds short of a skeleton
Barely there and oh so thin
They all said she was so sick and dying
She was an all-American girl

She told her friends that she was ill
With a disease that couldn’t be named
Her mom told the family that she was sick
With cancer, it was a lie and she knew it

But her little girl was down and falling fast
She couldn’t let them know what she knew
That her only daughter was dying
And there was nothing they could do

It was late September, a Friday night
The funeral home was cold inside
The coffin was closed to shield them from the sight
And yet there were tears in their sparkling eyes

She was a sixteen year old beauty queen
With a heart full of gold and a shining smile
Full of curiosity and intelligence
She was an all-American girl
