A Price to Pay
Out of all the thoughts I bear
Emotions I am trying to share
I have no place to begin
These words falling flat upon my lips
Unable to convey
Why can i not find the words to say?
Oh baby girl, you came to me
You held your broken heart
In those broken, tired hands
You begged me
Fix it, lady, please
You wept and sighed
You searched for things
You just can’t find
You’re at a dead end
But convinced you’re only halfway there
You won’t give it up
But you’re giving in
I’m watching you slowly die
Oh baby girl, why?
I can’t do what he did
I can’t fix your troubles in the night
With skin and sin
Combining
To keep you still alive,
Still in his sight
Baby girl you wanted to leave
But you refused not to stay
Trapped in the twisted game you play
Your lips are blue, hands are shaking
You’re farther in than close
To being out
You’re much more than a girl
Little less than a dream
So different than you first seemed
You think so deep and cut so low
More empowering than you could ever know
But when you’re gone
You are so far away
And spit accusations of insincerity
and triumph in my misery
But how could I have known?
And there’s a price to pay
You’ll find that out one day
But baby girl
I can’t let you to find it out from me
And so you sleep now
So tender, and undisturbed
Your fingers grasp the sheets
Your cheeks damp, and streaked
I see you unmasked,
such a beautiful thing
Inside your mind
You again dream
Of sinking ships and lovers lost
I helped you, he helped you,
But baby girl, at what cost?
