"Get thee to a nunnery!"

We live in a world
Warped by time
Where everything unique
Is viewed as a crime

From birth we are cursed
We stand out from the rest
We think and we wonder
But they told us ‘twas not best.

We sing to the Anthem
It is a simple tune
But it’s all we live by
Daybreak, nightfall, dawn and noon
We live for each other
For we are nothing alone
Disunity is sinful
A destructive cyclone

We showed them they were wrong
We built a machine
We loved but one woman
And we dared to dream

And instead of that world
So warped by time
I chose a different path
One that was all mine

I sing to an Anthem
It is a simple tune
But it’s all I live by
Daybreak, nightfall, dawn and noon
I live for myself
In the company of true friends
I live for me
For ego, the world never ends.

The author's comments:
I wrote this for my English class. We were supposed to read Anthem, by Ayn Rand, until my teacher realized she had picked the book off the wrong shelf and we weren't actually allowed to read it until next year. So she said if we read it anyway and did an assignment, we could get extra credit. Thus, my poem was born. Enjoy.

This is absolutely amazing!  The rhythm was completely flawless and I love the message in this poem.  Wow!
