"It makes no difference who or what you are, old or young, black or white, pagan, Jew, or Christian, I want to love you all and be loved by you all, and I mean to have your love." -Victoria Woodhull

You are an outcast.

Outcasts are
Free. They don't have the
Urgent need to impress or detest
To fit another's liking. Supposedly.
They are their own being, within
Their own self.
They have a life unharmed, polished,
Cleaned with
Shoe shine,
Toothpaste,
Window cleanser, and the like. But,
On the inside, bug spray
Brushes away the clean, perfect, untouchable
Vibe. And beyond it lies decay
And rot.

The outcast is
harmed. Inside their self,
Hoping,
Wishing.
Seeing the
Happy faces, sharing secrets,
Jumping with joy and pride. But
You an outcast, stand alone.
More and more,
You
Disappear, you are invisible,
And the happy faces grow
Around you. You recede. Doomed
Forever, inside the bubble you had no choice in
Creating. You are
Stuck, you can't get out.
You push, and
Shove, but no matter how much
Muscle is used in the task, your
Bubble cannot be penetrated, destroyed.
Over time, the
Bubble around you hardens,
Thickening and forming, into
An unscarable shell. Only
Peepholes reveal the outside world
To your eyes. And each
Group of happy faces are within
Their own unbreakable bubble. But
Happy bubbles, which are shared amongst
Their kind. And as hard as you desperately press
Upon their bubbles, you
Cannot get in. You are hopeless,
Lifeless, a
Worm amongst birds.

The author's comments:
This is poem is inspired by the novel, Looks by Madeline George. A novel that helped me understand the "ugly beauty" that can be derived from poetry. I hope you will feel ugly beauty in this poem.
