Sunrise
Like another type of vision
Illuminating the lurking shadows that
Stand above every aspect of your room
Time to get up
Time to don another mask
Slowly piece together the costume
Articles of wear you can't seem to remember purchasing
But anything that would fit into the machine
Known as conformity
Finalize your features
Knowing that the eyes gazing back
From the seemingly flawless face of the mirror
Reflect the only flaw in your disguise
Those eyes
Flitting across the reflection
Like peering from inside a clay mold
That has hardened atop your contours
Muscles stirring
But you can only catch a peripheral motion
Just another ghost reminding you
That the skin beneath the shirt is suffocating
And that eventually
Your new skin will shed, just like always
Hush now; no time for a conscience
Take one final look at your body; just a stage prop
Before slipping past the door
Ready for another day
Of waiting for the paint to peel

The author's comments:
I got the idea for this poem while sitting outside in the lunch area, watching the "popular" kids play around. I know some of them personally, and alone, they are completely different people.
