"I can and I will. Watch me." - Carrie Green

The joy of waking up to sunlight streaming in through the window.

The joy of crunching cereal with family.

The joy of choosing an outfit for a hot summer doy.

The joy of licking the drops of ice cream streaming down my hands.

The joy of riding the waves at the beach, carefree.

The joy of waking up to a soft breeze knocking at the window.

The joy of smelling pumpkin spice and cinnamon.

The joy of watching the red and orange leaves fall.

The joy of trekking to school hand in hand with my sister.

The joy of giving thanks and spending time with family.

The joy of hearing the heater hum in the mornings.

The joy of wearing soft coats lined with wool.

The joy of drinking hot cocoa with extra marshmallows.

The joy of hearing the snow sigh underneath my booths.

The joy of hanging stockings on the mantelpiece.

The joy of waking up to the chirping of birds.

The joy of seeing the backyard in bloom.

The joy of seeing squirrels out and about.

The joy of having picnics under sunshine.

The joy of hearing laughter ring through the walls.

The joy that comes with each season.

The joy that comes with each year.

The joy that comes with each person you meet.

The joy that comes with a life full of possibility.

The author's comments:

This is a poem inspired by the unique repetitive writing style of Raymond Carver which is portrayed in his poem called "Fear." His poem explores the complex emotion of fear with depth in relation to his experiences and his thoughts. I based my poem on the emotion of joy and this format really helped me find what I appreciated in life. Writing this poem and reading it over and over again really helped me to stay motivated during these last weeks of the school year. I truly think that it's important to find what you are grateful for because knowing what those bits of sunshine are, help to make up for all of the darker spots in life.
