I always wanted to wake up to the sound of church bells,

to see my husband's face first in the hazy morning glow.

I couldn’t wait to get out of the prison cell they called school,

where my ideas stayed locked and forbidden.

Now I have my open canvas,

I can travel freely anywhere and think whatever I please.

I am married to the love of my life,

however, he does not see me the same.

I wish that girl knew she would have her heart ripped out of her,

as he tells her it’s over, she still stares numbly back at her love.

A heart is only so strong, and there is not enough room for two people.

So as I paint my favorite two versions of myself,

I wonder if the heart can be sewed back together.

With no chance of children, acceptance, and now love,

all I can do is imagine the girl I could’ve been.
