Burdens of Mine
I hold back secrets you don’t wish to know.
These things kept hidden make me seem so low.
It pains me to lie; I please hope you don’t mind.
I am keeping you from bearing these burdens of mine.
The weight that I feel, how it pains me so.
Sharing it would only worsen the blow.
You ask me things, and I dance along the lines.
I am keeping you from bearing these burdens of mine.
Evading your worry is harder than it seems.
You're watchful, you listen, you wait; I might scream!
I know you care, but please just let me get by!
I am keeping you from bearing these burdens of mine!
The lies that I tell are problems for others.
They cannot live the way they need, because of my orders.
I tell them, ‘Please wait, I just need my time.’
I am keeping you from bearing these burdens of mine.
They ask if they can tell, and I say no.
‘Respect me!’ I say. ‘When it is time, you will know.’
Oh, but who am I, to make them resign?
I am keeping you from bearing these burdens of mine.
My burdens cause problems every new time I share
With a person I trust; ‘You may need to pull up a chair.’
I knew this would happen, that I would be so malign;
I was only trying to keep you from these burdens of mine.

I am a 15 year old girl who loves to write anything from argumentative essays to fantasy YA novels. This piece was written during one of the lowest times in my life and I have a very personal connection with it. It is one of my favorite poems I have written and one of my proudest pieces of work. It is about having a heavy secret and sharing it with others, but then despising the fact that it has been shared and having this internal turmoil about the sharing of the secret and who to share it with. It is based completely off of real emotions from myself and real events that have happened in my life. I think this would be a good piece for TeenInk because it has a bit to do with Mental Health, and I feel as if many of the teens of the world will be able to relate to this piece and it could be the empathetic encouragement they need at that moment in their life, like it was writing it for me.
