For all the defenseless children caught in adult wars.

Oh, I heard a little story

Of a world so colorful and bright

Where people set the stakes sky high

Dancing to the rhythm of the wind

Defining their own history

A place where the freest birds take flight

Stretching out their feathered wings as they paint the dashing sky

Oh, I aspired to be one of their kind

It was a long-awaited day when I met life

A gentle being who promised birth

In a world full of budding trees

I smiled and said, “I’ll do my best to make you proud!”

With hopes and dreams running rife

I fantasized about the famous earth

Where vacant seas quietly appease

And living is out loud

A few weeks in I met my heartbeat

Its rhythm like a symphony

One, two, three, one, two, three

A chance to finally spread my wings

Oh, with that I’d be complete

I’d pave my path ambitiously

Oh, to live is to be free

That is when they pulled the strings

Angry men rob like plunderers

I shriek in pain and objection

But their hearing is impaired

They dare not listen

For they might discover that we are brothers

Heaven forbid they might feel a connection

Grown men are sorely scared

Of fading sparkles that forgot to glisten

But what if I could be a new kind of splendor

What if I could light the world

What if time could lose its meaning

What if I could redefine it

The stolen possibilities are scattered like embers

The dreamers dream once unfurled

Now screaming

But remember it wasn’t me that quit

Oh, I sob into my vanished story

Weakened by the fading light

Life is rare, and I wave it goodbye

A promising song that the tyrants viciously declined

They wrap themselves in their own glory

Romping through the night

They took my chance, I asked them why

Their sad excuse was awfully blind

The author's comments:

This piece is written from point of view of an aborted life. I know Abortion is a very heavy and controversial topic in modern society, and it is one I feel deeply inspired to address. As a person and as a writer I am most motivated by people and the potential and possiblity they have to fly. Many people view abortion from a selfish perspective. "It's a womans choice," a phrase I hear all too often. But what about the baby? What about the human being that could be born? What about the person that could become something original, wonderful, and great!? So beside the controversy, and the debate I am unafraid to write about abortion. Because when defenseless life's cannot fight for themselves, it is our duty to stand up, be loud, and fight for them!
